Prep Sports Roundup: Glen Ellyn Golfers Advance in State Play

Glenbard West and Glenbard South's girls teams both qualified for this week's sectional, while the boys squads will be sending a number of individuals to sectional competition.

Glenbard West and Glenbard South will be sending its girls golf teams to this week’s sectional tournament after their performances in regional play last week.

On the boys’ side, neither school qualified its team for the sectional, yet the Hilltoppers and Raiders will be well-represented with a number of individual qualifiers.

West and South’s girls teams finished 1-2 at the Lake Park regional, held at Indian Lakes in Bloomingdale. The Hilltoppers cruised to the team title with a 357, outdistancing the runner-up Raiders, who shot 392.

Three-time state qualifier Brooke Kochevar carded a 78 to win medalist honors. Kochevar will be going for her fourth state tourney appearance this week.

Complementing Kochevar at regionals was sophomore Emma Klimala and junior Ellen Nighbor, who shot 90 and 93, respectively. Kelli Pryde, a senior, had a 106, and sophomore Morgan Adair a 111.

The Raiders also punched their ticket to next Tuesday’s St. Ignatius sectional at Lemont’s Cog Hill No. 3 course. Junior Hannah Taylor and senior Victoria Yang both shot 94s to lead the way for Glenbard South. Seniors Lauren Grigsby (101), Jessica Yocum (103) and Cara Andrzejewski (104), along with sophomore Lilly Mittenthal (119), round out the Raiders’ sectional qualifying team.

Glenbard West’s boys squad competed in the tough Wheaton Warrenville South Class 3A regional and placed fourth with a team score of 325. Lyons Township (298) won the meet, while Hinsdale Central (300) and the host Tigers (312) secured the remaining sectional team berths.

The Hilltoppers, however, qualified five individuals for Monday’s Bartlett sectional, to be held at the Bartlett Hills course.

Senior Peter Norgaard was the top at-large individual qualifier out of the WWS regional with a 78. A quartet of seniors—Danny Schlesser (81), Jack Olsen (83), Myles Purdom (84) and Trevor Touluse (87) —also made the cut for Glenbard West.

The Raiders just missed qualifying as a team at the Burlington Central Class 2A regional, finishing fourth—four strokes behind third-place Burlington Central (322-326).

, who tied for eighth place at last fall’s Class 2A state tourney, carded a 78 and will try to make a return trip to state when he and two other Raiders play Monday in the Wheaton Academy sectional at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles.

Will Lear, a senior, also qualified after finishing just behind Turner with a 79. Senior Mitch Gasbarro (82) is the Raiders’ third qualifier.

Glenbard West girls cross country

The Hilltoppers continued what’s shaping up to be a banner season by finishing second in the recent 26-team Wheaton Falcon Classic.

Glenbard West’s impressive team performance came in a field that featured 12 ranked teams—including the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth teams in state.

In the flight meet format, each of the top seven compete individually in seven different races (or flights). Starting off the Hilltoppers was Kate Majewski placing fourth (19:06) in Flight 7, followed by Megan Ozog’s fifth-place finish in Flight 6 (19:08), Cynthia Mote’s eighth in Flight 5 (19:09), Emma Reifel earning sixth in Flight 4 (18:42), Katie Born’s sixth place Flight 3 (18:21), Maddie Nagle’s highest team finish in Flight 2 (second place, 17:38), and Madeline Perez’s fourth-place finish in Flight 1 (17:21).

The final team scoring had Glenbard West with 35 points, Lake Park with 36 and Wheaton Warrenville South with 38 points.
