Hilltoppers Have no Trouble Dismantling Willowbrook

Glenbard West, now 2-0, crushes the Warriors, 49-0. The Hilltoppers now turn their attention to Lyons Township, whom they visit on Friday. LT handed Glenbard West one of its two 2010 losses.

The victory bell at Glenbard West rang loud late Saturday afternoon after the Hilltoppers dismantled Willowbrook, 49-0, in the 2011 home opener.

The Hilltoppers are hoping Lyons Township, whom they visit in an early-season West Suburban Silver showdown next Friday, heard that bell all the way in LaGrange.

Exacting revenge on the Lions, who embarrassed the Hilltoppers on Duchon Field , 31-13, is foremost on players’ minds … and coaches’ minds.

“LT is the next one, and yes, there’s a revenge factor there,” Hetlet said. “Our kids haven’t forgotten that.”

The loss to LT prevented Glenbard West from winning the WWS title outright. (The crown was shared by the Hilltoppers, LT and York.) If the Hilltoppers defeat LT, they will have avenged both of their 2010 losses within a span of three weeks taking into account last Sunday’s 21-7 victory over .

“We’re definitely looking to Lyons Township. We’ve been looking forward to playing them for a while now,” said quarterback Justice Odom, who didn’t start the game and saw limited action. “Last year, some people almost felt as hurt from (losing to) LT as the Wheaton South game.

“We’ve definitely been anticipating the game. Coach Hetlet said he’s been wanting to play them more than anyone. I think there’s something about them beating us on Duchon (Field) that was just ugly.”

Glenbard West made short work of Willowbrook, scoring on its first six possessions during the first half. Senior Avery Balogh’s two carries on the day both went for touchdowns—a 61-yarder on the first play of the game and a 57-yard run in the second quarter that put Glenbard West ahead, 35-0.

After Balogh’s first score, junior quarterback Henry Haeffner got into the act by connecting with senior Dan Kiel, who turned upfield and sprinted to the house for a TD that covered 83 yards.

“Every week you’ve got to come in and play tough,” Hetlet said. “I thought our kids got better today. I thought we played good and we executed. I’m happy with the way they played.”

An Odom-to-Nathan Marcus 5-yard touchdown pass with 1:15 left in the first quarter made it 28-0. Junior tailback Deon Dumas closed out the first half with a 30-yard scamper for a touchdown.

Dumas finished with 42 yards on three carries, and classmate Joey Zito had four carries for 64—including a 46-yard touchdown run during the first quarter. Meanwhile, Nathan DeBorde, a junior, checked in with 57 yards on seven carries.

“I thought our running game was really on today,” Odom said. “Throughout the week we worked on passing a lot. We didn’t work on it as much during the game, but our running game definitely took off today. Avery has a ridiculous game. He’s really been stepping up and he’s a stud. Deon Dumas is going to be a big part of our year, too.”
