About the game

The Raiders fought through Mother Nature and some anxious moments late in the game last Saturday before prevailing over Bloom for their first victory of 2011. Lightning and rain struck with the score knotted up, 28-28 late in the fourth quarter, and Glenbard South positioned on Bloom’s 5-yard line.

When play resumed, the Raiders’ drive stalled. However, Glenbard South ended up tallying the game-deciding points on a safety with under two minutes remaining when Bloom QB LaVante Blackful was called for intentionally grounding the ball.

Sanders turned in another impressive performance for the Raiders, gaining more than 200 all-purpose yards and scoring two touchdowns—one on an 88-yard kickoff return. This week, Rich East will counter Sanders will two formidable backs of their own, White and Willingham.

White scored twice and Willingham once in the Rockets’ loss last week. The duo combined for nearly 350 yards rushing during Rich East’s 25-19 week one triumph over Eisenhower.

Following Friday’s matchup, the Raiders will face their stiffest test to date when they visit Crete-Monee Sept. 16. The Warriors have advanced to the Class 6A quarterfinals each of the past two seasons and went into week three undefeated.

About the game

Glenbard West warmed up for Friday night’s showdown with LT—just one of three games it’ll play under the lights this season—by blasting Willowbrook in last Saturday’s home opener. The game was a cakewalk, but you can bet the Hilltoppers are as fired up about playing LT as they were when they faced Wheaton Warrenville South two weeks ago.

The West Suburban Silver opener for both teams is a matchup the Hilltoppers have had circled on their calendar for quite a while. Current Glenbard West players who were on the 2010 roster haven’t forgotten the 31-13 defeat they endured at the hands of LT during the regular season finale at Duchon Field.

LT is reeling after getting shut out by Downers South last week and bowled over by Mustangs’ star tailback Josh Williams, who rushed for 195 yards and two scores. Although Williams is arguably the area’s best back, the success DGS experienced running the ball should bode well for Glenbard West, whose strong suit is its ground game.

Despite being whitewashed by DGS, the Lions can move the chains. Onion directs LT’s spread offense, which features four, sometimes five, receiver sets. Last week, he threw for 250 yards while the Lions amassed more than 300 yards in total offense. In week one, LT handed Stevenson its first regular-season loss in 20 games. Stevenson is seeking to make the postseason for the 23rd consecutive year.
