D41 Schools Preparing For Think Tank Initiatives Coming This Fall

Merging classrooms and a new school-day structure are among the controversial changes. A breakfast program at Churchill will also be an addition this school year.

Elementary schools in Glen Ellyn are preparing for the fall 2013 implementation of a series of changes and initiatives at District 41’s four elementary schools, including specializing teachers, creating a two-block format for the school day and merging some fourth- and fifth-grade classes, the Suburban Life reports.

The “Think Tank” initiatives were controversial when introduced last March, and although the District is using a committee of staff and liaisons called Team 21 to ready parents and students for the changes, some parents still feel that not enough information is getting out.

“Parents that I’ve spoken to are concerned about readiness for the fall because very little has been communicated with parents,” mother-of-three Stephanie Clark told the paper. “The parents and community members share the same goal that we want any changes to be successful.”

Additionally, the paper reports, Churchill Elementary School will begin offering a breakfast program to complement their free- and reduced-lunch program this fall, due to 48 percent of students at the school meeting eligibility.

Reports show no additional cost to D41 for the breakfast program, the paper said.
