Lincoln Elementary Celebrates 50th Anniversary

A number of special activities are planned throughout the year and former students are invited to participate.

Students at will be celebrating a major milestone in the school’s history this year.

The elementary school is celebrating its 50th anniversary and next week, a year of festivities will kick off with a very special back to school ice cream social. Other festivities will take place over the course of the year and the school hopes former students will come back to participate.

Every year the school hosts its ice cream social, but this year it ties in specifically with the anniversary, said Kristin Massey, Abraham Lincoln PTA president.

The ice cream social is normally held the first week of school, but to tie in with the actual anniversary of the first day of school at Lincoln, it will be held on Tuesday, she said. The school opened on Sept. 4, 1962, which in 1962 was the Tuesday after Labor Day – just as it is this year.

“We are trying to incorporate the history of our school and the history of Abraham Lincoln,” Massey said, about the yearlong celebration.

Students will be doing school projects that will incorporate the 50th anniversary or the history of Abraham Lincoln, she said, adding the fifth graders will make a time capsule that will be stashed away for future classes to find.

The school is also planning special mid-year and end of year festivities, which it hopes will draw former students back for the celebrations, she said. The mid-year celebration will be held on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12.

The ice cream social will be held Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Former students interested in participating in the anniversary celebration can contact Kristin Massey for more information.
