It's Official: Students' Winter Break Extended for at Least One Day

Extreme weather conditions prompt school leaders to cancel school on Monday, Jan. 6. Garbage collection in Glen Ellyn also will be postponed.

It's official. All Glen Ellyn schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 6, due to extreme weather conditions, extending students' winter break by at least one day.

Glenbard High School District 87 made its announcement at about 3:30 p.m.:

"Due to inclement weather, all Glenbard District 87 high schools and the administration center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 6. All after-school activities are cancelled for Monday. With frigid temperatures in the forecast for Tuesday, a decision about the status of schools on Tuesday will be made by noon Monday."

Also closed tomorrow: Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41, Community Consolidated Elementary District 89, St. Petronille School and College of DuPage.

Glen Ellyn Park District preschool education programs held in District 41 facilities also will be canceled, however Main Street Recreation Center, Spring Avenue Recreation Center and Ackerman Sports Center will be open as usual. The Village of Glen Ellyn also has announced Monday garbage collection will be postponed until Tuesday.

High winds and bone-chilling temperatures are expected to hit the area tonight. The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning that extends from 6 p.m. Sunday through noon on Tuesday. Wind chills are expected to hit 50 below zero.

So far, no schools have announced cancelations for Tuesday.
