Glen Ellyn Backpack Giveaway Aug. 3

Backpacks will be distributed to families on a first-come, first-served basis at The Cellular Connection in Glen Ellyn.

Buying all the school supplies kids need can be expensive but necessary to get the school year off to a great start. One local retailer is going to help some families out, giving away a limited number of backpacks.

Glen Ellyn residents can benefit from The Cellular Connection’s School Rocks Backpack Giveaway being held on Aug. 3. Backpacks filled with supplies including pencils, paper, folders, glue and more items will be handed out, according to the company.

The giveaway kicks off at noon on Aug. 3 and will last until 2 p.m. at The Cellular Connection, 719 W. Roosevelt Road. The backpacks will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis and while the supplies last. Roughly 100 to 150 backpacks will be distributed and any remaining will be donated to local schools.

The wireless retailer is donating about 60,000 backpacks around the country through its 400 stores, the company said in a news release.

Customers at the store have had the opportunity to round-up purchases up to the nearest dollar, toward the backpack initiative.

Citing statistics from the National Retail Federation, The Cellular Connection said the average parent with children in grades K-12 will spend $95.44 on school supplies such as notebooks, pencils and backpacks. In addition, nearly 16 million children in the U.S. live in poverty.

“TCC is doing its part to ensure that as many children as possible are set-up for educational success,” the company said in its news release.

The Cellular Connection is located at 719 W. Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn. Its backpack giveaway will be held Aug. 3 from noon to 2 p.m. and backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
