Local Children Hop to Help

Glen Ellyn, IL; Local Arbor View Elementary School children will hop to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and student fight muscle diseases affecting children and adults. “Hoppers” will collect money from family, friends and neighbors for every hop they make during a timed period – typically anywhere from 10 to 150 hops during the week of May 21st, 2012.

Arbor View has been hopping and helping MDA for a number of years. They continue to make this event a successful learning experience for the students by teaching them not only disability awareness, but also that by coming together they can make a big difference one hop at a time.

The Hop-a-Thon will take place at Arbor View Elementary, 22W430 Ironwood in Glen Ellyn.

The Hop-a-Thon culminates a week-long disability awareness program in which teachers educate children about muscles, disabilities, diversity, and helping others. Donations raised from the Hop-a-Thon help MDA send more than 50 children (including Nicolas Gonzales) with muscular dystrophy from the surrounding area to MDA summer camp at Camp Read Leaf in Ingleside, IL from June 17th-23rd. Funds also assist with repairing wheelchairs and leg braces; fuel worldwide research seeking treatments and cures to more than 40 neuromuscular diseases; and much more.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association's Hop-a-Thon program began in the early 1980s. Thousands of child care centers, preschools and elementary schools across the country participate in MDA Hop-a-Thons annually.  Hop-a-Thons offer a valuable lesson plan based on three important concepts: build awareness, teach acceptance and motivate to help.  MDA's Hop-a-Thon program is endorsed by the National Child Care Association.

MDA is a non-profit organization providing help, hope and knowledge for everyone suffering from neuromuscular diseases and entire communities across the nation.  MDA is the world's largest non-governmental sponsor of research seeking the causes of and effective treatments for neuromuscular diseases, sponsoring some 400 research projects annually.  Through some 225 hospital-affiliated clinics, MDA offers quality medical care from doctors, nurses and therapists experienced in dealing with neuromuscular diseases. These clinics also serve as sites for clinical trials of the latest experimental therapies and drugs. MDA also offers about 290 support groups for those with neuromuscular diseases and their families.  When medically prescribed by the local MDA clinic physician, MDA assists with the purchase of wheelchairs, leg braces, and communication devices.  Since 1955, MDA has built bridges and knocked down barriers for youngsters with neuromuscular diseases by providing an unforgettable week at MDA summer camp. Campers say the week they spend at MDA camp is "the best week of the year."
