Avoid Hawthorne, Watch for Children: Districts 41, 87 Back to School Notes

Officials at District 41 are encouraging parents to avoid Hawthorne Boulevard on the way to school.

From District 41 and District 89

Construction underway

The Village of Glen Ellyn's Hawthorne Boulevardd reconstruction project is still underway, with paving, sidewalk, curb and gutter installation and other activities taking place. School begins Wednesday; please keep the following in mind for safe travel to school:

  • Allow enough time to get to school, remembering that there will be more traffic on the roads, including school buses.
  • Avoid Hawthorne, whether driving or walking to school.
  • Hawthorne between Kenilworth Avenue in Glen Ellyn and President Street in Wheaton is open to pedestrians and vehicles, so to reach , please take Kenilworth or Glencoe to Hawthorne.

Parents are the judge of when a child is ready to walk to school. We encourage walking to school for those children who can safely do so: it's good physical activity, fosters independence and alleviates congestion around the school. If you drive your child, please comply with the drop-off and pick-up procedures established by the school.

Watch for children

This week, in particular, please use extra caution when driving in the morning and afternoon as students are making their way to and from school. Also, remember traffic laws specific to school safety zones.

As we start a new school year, it's a good time to visit your school's website and click on the various menu options to become familiar with where you can access information. Each school's website provides a wealth of information.

You can keep up with school announcements by visiting the "Daily Announcements" quick link on your school's website. The quick links menu is on the left side of the home page. Another useful resource is the "Events Calendar," which also is listed on the Quick Links menu.
