District 87 Has Big Plans for Its Schools, and Public Input is Needed
Buildings, technology and extra academic help all part of a plan to improve District 87.
Parents and community members in Glenbard High School District 87 are invited to any of three community forums this month to learn about plans to improve the district's buildings and programs.
The forums will focus on three key areas:
- 10-year master facility plan
- Instructional technology
- Extended lunch periods with academic support
The forums will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the following dates:
- Sept. 12 at Glenbard South, 23W200 Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn
- Sept. 17 at Glenbard North, 990 N. Kuhn Road in Carol Stream
- Sept. 25 at Glenbard West, 670 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn
- Sept. 26 at Glenbard East, 1014 S. Main St. in Lombard.
The district has developed a long-term master facility plan that will address buildings and grounds needs and match facilities to the college-ready/career-ready curriculum.
Administrators proposed a multi-year plan that focuses on buildings’ primary infrastructure (warm, safe, dry and cool), classroom renovations and additions, and general renovations.
Instructional Technology in Glenbard
An instructional technology strategic plan was adopted last year. It outlines a multi-year strategy to use mobile learning devices as tools to increase student learning. This year, students are allowed to bring their own smartphones or tablets to use in class. Next fall, the district plans to require large segments of students to have a device as part of their course materials. We are still determining which groups of students will be involved in the 2014-15 program.
Extended Lunch Periods with Academic Supports
The school schedule features an eight-period day that includes 48-minute periods, including lunch. The 48-minute lunch provides time for all students to access academic assistance and get a head start on their homework. Students may use the extended lunch period to join subject area study groups, visit the test center to make up work, meet with their guidance counselor and attend study skills sessions.
Please plan to attend one of the forums to learn more.
