District 87 Board Approves 3-Year Contract For Non-Classified Staff

The contract addressed salary increases, retirement payments and insurance coverage after retirement.

Non-certified staff at Glenbard Township High School District 87 have a new three-year contract.

The union and school district came to an agreement, which was ratified on June 3. The Board of Education approved the agreement at its June 10 meeting, according to the district.

The contract is effective from July 1 until June 30, 2016 and will increase wages for non-certified staff 3.16 percent in the first year, 3 percent in the second year and 3 percent in the third year, the district said.

The agreement was negotiated between the school district and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1970.

“We were bargaining in tough economic times,” Deb Redmond, the AFSCME Local 1970 President said in the news release. “In spite of that, we were able to come up with a contract that our members were comfortable accepting.”

In addition to the salary increases, the contract also includes the following benefits for AFSCME employees:

  • Employees granted positions as coaches and sponsors will be paid at time and one-half their regular rate of pay after 40 hours of work;
  • Employees who have completed 10 years of consecutive full-time years of service with the district and are eligible for retirement under the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund are eligible to receive a retirement payment of 5.5 percent wage increase in each year of the employee’s last year or years of employment not to exceed three years;
  • Employees who retire under the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund who have completed 10 years of consecutive full-time employment may continue to participate in the district’s insurance programs, which they are enrolled in at the time of retirement. The School Board’s contribution will be the same contribution made on behalf of active AFSCME employees for three years from the date of retirement. A retiree who exceeds a six percent increase in their IMRF reportable wages in any of the three years prior to retirement will forfeit one year of retiree insurance.
In the news release Superintendent David Larson said: “I am proud to work with our talented and dedicated AFSCME staff, and I look forward to continued good relations. Our AFSCME members are committed to providing quality service to our students and their families. They are key to what makes Glenbard District 87 a high caliber school district.”
