COD Building Named for College President Breuder

In a 4-3 vote, the college board narrowly agreed to name the building after the school's president, who is still in office.

The College of DuPage board voted 4-3 on Tuesday night to name the school’s Homeland Security Education Center after current school president Robert Breuder, the Daily Herald reports

According to the paper, the measure was proposed by outgoing board chairman David Carlin; the 66,000-square-foot, $30 million building was opened in 2011, and houses the school’s criminal justice, law-enforcement and fire-science/EMS programs.

While none of the seven board members disputed Breuder’s legacy, dissenting trustees said that it was inappropriate to name a building after a sitting president—but the four who voted in favor said that it was better for a board familiar with Breuder to decide on an honor, not a board who hadn’t worked with him as much, the paper said.

"Dr. Breuder, in the time he's been here, has accomplished more than some community college presidents will accomplish in a lifetime,” Carlin told the paper. “I don't know how you argue with bestowing this honor upon him."
