Village Warns Against Volcano Mulching

From the village of Glen Ellyn The Environmental Commission in collaboration with the Public Works Department, continues to place placards around the Village to raise awareness about volcano mulching. Mulching helps conserve soil moisture, moderate soil temperatures, reduce competition from roots of weeds and turf, and facilitate penetration of water to the roots of woody plants. However, a common mulching practice is "volcano" mulching, where mulch is piled up the trunk to form a volcano shape. This can have serious negative effects on plant health, such as uprooting, increased risk of root stress, vulnerability to fungal diseases and bark decay. For questions regarding the volcano mulching awareness program, please contact the Public Works Department at 630-469-6756.
