Residents Uneasy About Adding Through Traffic for Neighborhood Development

Montclair Avenue, near Glencrest Middle School, is a quiet street but that could change if a proposed development is approved.

The changes needed to be made to an existing subdivision have some residents concerned.

Sean Buckley recently moved to Milton Avenue in Glen Ellyn with his family. Not long after moving to Milton Avenue, which runs runs north-south and intersects with Sheehan Avenue just west of Glen Crest Middle School, Buckley decided to move one street east because of the cul-de-sac. He felt it was a safer place to raise two young children. But just months after making the move, the village is considering adding a new subdivision that would turn his no outlet street into a through-way street like Milton.

Buckley and his neighbors feel the current subdivision experiences high levels of cut through traffic bound for Route 53, something neighbors say will only get worse by adding additional access points. Instead, the neighbors have come up with alternatives to the current plan. Neighbors would like to see the entrance points to the subdivision located along Sheehan Avenue instead of Montclair to prevent the cut through traffic.

Buckley learned of the proposed changes when he received a letter from K. Hovnanian Homes, the builders seeking approval for the new subdivision. Buckley isn't opposed to the new development, in fact he said he welcomes the addition but he and fellow neighbors are concerned about children's safety when walking to school, foliage, and potential flooding and zoning issues.

Buckley and his neighbors will appear at Thursday's plan commission meeting to address the commissioners with their concerns and how the proposed changes will impact their neighborhoods.
