Glen Ellyn Trustees Will Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Tax Levy

The Volunteer Fire Department is proposing a new revenue source, funded either by property taxes or a tax on residents' water bills, to meet its increasing financial demands.

Glen Ellyn Village Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed 2013 tax levy, its annual request for property taxes, at its regular board meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.

The public hearing will be preceded by a discussion on whether to fund the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department via property taxes rather than donations, in order to generate the $870,000 necessary to meet the fire company's shortfall

"A new revenue source is necessary" to keep up with increasing costs of the operation, according to a memo to the Village Board.

The village's portion of the proposed levy is $7.3 million, and the library's portion is $4.2 million for a total proposed levy request of $11.5 million. If approved, the fire company would show up as a separate line item on the levy.

The levy will be up for final approval at the board's Nov. 25 meeting. The Village Board meets at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 525 Duane St. Public comment will be accepted.
