Debate Continues Over Proposed Route 53/Butterfield Gas Station

Would the gas station septuple the risk of cancer for people using the Butterfield Park District facility north of Butterfield Road?

The debate over a proposed 1.5-acre Mobil gas station, car wash and Bucky's convenience store in unincorporated Glen Ellyn, at the northeast corner of Route 53 and Butterfield Road, continued on Thursday before the DuPage County Zoning Board of Appeals, the Daily Herald reports.

According to the paper, the Butterfield Park District is charging that the gas station would release an amount of the carcinogen Benzene to increase the cancer risk seven times over for people using a nearby Park District recreational area; environmental experts made that case before the Board on Thursday.

The prospective developers, Buchanan Energy of Omaha, Neb., have disputed their claims, but Park District attorney Phil Luetkehans told the board that "Our response, and what they agreed to, is that their device would not pick up Benzene in the amount we believe would be in existence,” the paper said.
