Joanne Zienty recently published her first novel, "The Things We Save."

Author Joanne Zienty, who lives in Wheaton, was named winner of the "Soon to be Famous Illinois Author Contest," according to the Chicago Tribune.

Zienty, a media specialist at the Forest School Library in Des Plaines, recently published a book called "The Things We Save," the Tribune reports.

Set in Chicago, her first novel is a coming-of-age family saga, according to Zienty's website

"My first success as a writer came in 5th grade, when I completed a 70-page novel—an “homage” to Walter Farley’s Black Stallion series— and had my first play – a Thanksgiving melodrama – produced on stage at my elementary school," Zienty wrote in a personal statement. "I’ve been writing ever since."
