State Police Roadside Safety Check Begins Friday

About 40 percent of all fatal crashes in Illinois involve DUI, according to state police.

The Illinois State Police District 15 will conduct a roadside safety check between 11 p.m. Aug. 23 and 4 a.m. Aug. 24 on the ramp from North Avenue to southbound Interstate 355, according to a press release from state Police Captain Joe Perez.

The State Police has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois. Officers working this detail will be watchful for drivers who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Alcohol and drug impairment is a significant factor in nearly 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois, according to the press release. Roadside checks are designed to keep roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road.

This project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety.
