Sheriff to Release New Information on 1985 Murder

Murder of Kristina Wesselman remains unsolved for 26 years.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office will release new information on the 26th anniversary of the slaying of Kristina Wesselman, a former Glenbard South High School student.

But the Sheriff’s Office is keeping a tight lid on what that new information might be.

Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, said no one has been charged with the murder. He said he did not know what information the Sheriff’s Office will release.

“Whatever they plan on talking about, our office has not had anything to do with it,” Darrah said.

Wesselman was killed July 21, 1985 while walking home from the Jewel Food Store at the intersection of Butterfield Road and Route 53. According to reports, Wesselman, who was 15-years-old at the time, went to the store to purchase a candy bar and a soft drink.

According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, Wesselman was last seen walking on a well-traveled path in unincorporated Glen Ellyn toward her home. Her mother reported her missing when she failed to return home. The next day, Wesselman’s body was found by detectives in a field near the path where she was last seen. According to reports, Wesselman was raped, murdered, and repeatedly stabbed to death. DNA was left behind but there have been no matches.

Wessleman’s case has remained unsolved for nearly three decades. Several websites, including a blog, are dedicated to Wesselman’s memory.

Wesselman’s mother, Sandy, is expected to speak during Thursday’s press conference.
