ST. CHARLES

Crooked Check For Chairs

A 62-year-old woman of the 700 block of Monroe Avenue in St. Charles reported at 3:08 p.m. Oct. 10 that someone used a fraudulent check to attempt to purchase some chairs she attempted to sell on Craigslist. The buyer agreed to sell the chairs for $325. She was sent a check for $3,050, with instructions to deposit the check in her account. Then she was supposed to send a check for the balance, minus $120 for her trouble, via Western Union to a person in Indianapolis.

The woman told police she believed something was not right and took the check to a Bank of America branch on which the check was drawn. She learned there were no Bank of America branches in Utah, where the check reportedly originated. She took the check to police.
