No Assault Weapons Ban Planned for Glen Ellyn

With concealed carry now legal in Illinois, communities have a deadline to enact or revise assault weapons bans. Glen Ellyn isn't considering it, according to an official.

With a deadline looming for Illinois municipalities to enact legislation banning assault weapons, many communities, such as nearby Clarendon Hills, are scrambling to address the issue, Glen Ellyn on the other hand has no plans to take on assault weapons.

With the passage this week of concealed carry legislation in Illinois and according to the law’s language, it allows communities 10 days after the law’s passage to adopt or revise assault weapons bans.

Glen Ellyn Police Deputy Chief Bill Holmer said on Thursday that as far as he was aware, the village has no plans to discuss an assault weapons ban. The Chicago Tribune reported that several communities have implemented or rejected bans in recent weeks.

Now that concealed carry is law, the Glen Ellyn police department will deal with what the legislature has put forward, Holmer said. It may mean more research and preparation on the part of the police and the department.

The Illinois State Police is now charged with determining who will be allowed to provide firearms training, necessary for those seeking a concealed carry license. Holmer said he expected the state will not involve municipalities in the process and Glen Ellyn does not have a gun range for training purposes.
