Glen Ellyn Man Indicted on 7 Counts of First Degree Murder in Wife's Death

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin announced the indictment of Juan M. Granados in the 2011 murder and sexual assault of his wife Nancy Bustos.

A Glen Ellyn man has been indicted on seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of sexual assault in the October 2011 assault and murder of his wife.

A grand jury indicted Juan M. Granados, 34, of the 0-99 block of Briar Street, in the 2011 sexual assault and murder of his wife Nancy Bustos, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Wednesday.

Glen Ellyn Police officers were making a well-being check on Nancy Bustos at the Briar Street apartment on Oct. 16, 2011, when they discovered her lifeless body in the bathroom, according to a statement from Berlin. Bustos had been sexually assaulted and strangled. The Glen Ellyn Police and Major Crimes Taskforce investigation led them to Granados.

Granados whereabouts are unknown at this time, but after the murder it was believed he may have fled to Mexico.

The grand jury indictment came down on June 26, but officials didn’t announce the indictment until now because law enforcement officials were attempting to locate Granados and were concerned he might be tipped off, said state's attorney spokesman Paul Darrah. With his whereabouts still unknown officials felt confident releasing the information wouldn’t hinder the investigation.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorneys Office it is alleged that at some point on the night of Oct. 15 or morning of Oct. 16, Granados and Bustos were in the apartment together and an altercation occurred, which resulted in the sexual assault and murder of Bustos. After the altercation, Granados fled the scene.

Glen Ellyn Police Chief Philip Norton expressed his sympathy for the victim’s family. He also praised his officers and those from the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force for “their professional and thorough investigation of this case,” according to the news release.

Berlin said in the statement: “Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the United States. The negative effect on all family members, especially children, can be devastating when, as is alleged in this case, a case of suspected domestic violence turns into a murder. I would like to thank the Glen Ellyn Police Department and members of the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force for their outstanding work investigating this senseless crime.”

A no bond arrest warrant has been issued for Granados. Anyone with information regarding Granados’s whereabouts is urged to call the Glen Ellyn Police Department at 630-469-1187 or the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office at 630-407-8000.
