Hillcrest Avenue Fire Destroys Deck Monday Morning

A family was able to safely evacuate its home Monday morning in the 100 block of Hillcrest Avenue.

A small fire early Monday morning on Hillcrest Avenue destroyed a backyard deck on a home, but everyone inside the home was able to evacuate safely.

At 1:49 a.m. the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. responded to a call of a fire at a home in the 100 block of Hillcrest Avenue, according to Craig Eldridge, public information officer for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co.

The fire on the home's deck was quickly extinguished after crews arrived, Eldridge said. The family of four was asleep when the fire started, but awoke from the sound of the home’s smoke alarms. They were able to escape safely and spent the night with other family.

The home received minor damage as a result of the deck fire, Eldridge said in the news release.

The fire remains under investigation, he said. A damage estimate was not available. The family should be able to return to the home later this week.
