Former Firefighter Pleads Not Guilty to Stealing Thousands

A former treasurer for the pleaded not guilty to stealing more than $260,000 from the company.  

David W. Garmoe, 54, of Glen Ellyn, appeared in court Monday with his attorney to enter his plea during arraignment at the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton. 

Garmoe was indicted May 31 and faces 14 counts that range from theft to money laundering. 

In February, the fire company alerted the about a discrepancy in the company's bank account. That tip led to an investigation, which allegedly reveals that since 2004 Garmoe was the main operator of theft that includes more than 87 transactions, which he allegedly used for personal gain and to help support his private business, Fireground Supply, in West Chicago.

Garmoe was taken into custody on May 13 and was later released on a $500,000 bond with the condition that he stay away from the premises of the fire station and that he turn over his passport to the Glen Ellyn Police Department. 

Although Garmoe will not be able to travel out of the country, he will be allowed to travel to Wisconsin. During Monday's arraignment, Judge Daniel Guerin granted Garmoe permission to travel out of state July 2-3 to attend a wedding in Madison, WI. 

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company deferred all comments to the State's Attorney's office and the Fireground Supply owner declined to comment.  

Garmoe's next court date is schedule for Aug. 8.
