Officials Investigate Death of Fetus Found in Dumpster at Yorktown Mall

An investigation has been launched to try and determine the circumstances of the death of a fetus found recently in a dumpster, officials said.

The body of a dead fetus was found recently inside a dumpster at the Yorktown Mall.

Officials are now trying to determine the circumstances that led to the fetus' death and subsequent dumping at the mall in Lombard.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, Lombard Police Chief Ray Byrne and Glendale Heights Police Chief Mike Marron have launched an investigation into the death, DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah said Tuesday.

Officials did not disclose when the fetus was found or an age of the fetus.

ABC7 is reporting that the Glendale Heights police said a teen delivered the fetus and dumped it Saturday at the mall. The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office has not confirmed this information.

In addition, WGNTV reported a "source" said that a Villa Park teen delivered a baby Thursday at her uncle's apartment in Glendale Heights. The teen allegedly placed it in a vehicle trunk on Friday and left it there until she disposed of it at the mall.

Glen Ellyn Patch contacted the Glendale Heights Police Department to confirm the reports and officials would not comment, directing questions to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

An autopsy was performed and the results are pending, Darrah said in a news release. No other information was yet available, he said.

A "baby" is able to physically live outside the womb on its own. A fetus cannot sustain life outside of the womb on its own.

Dear Elmhurst Patch and Mrs/Ms Lopez, Newborn baby abandonment and death- this important news was completely mitigated! You can quote the DuPage County State's Attorney's office as calling the newborn a "fetus" but do not continue to use this false information. It's not ethical! If the officials in the recent Connecticut school shooting stated the number of murdered victims was 5 and the journalist knew the information was indeed much greater, isn't that journalist ethically bound to report the correct information, not the number an official supplies!? As women, we of course know that when a baby is born it is properly called a newborn! This is so important because some of your readers may think destroying a fetus is "okay" but are definitely bothered and shocked by a newborn's death! The whole quality of this story was ruined by using the wrong word. It is not only to the detriment of the newborn and his or her mother and father, but future babies born who are at risk for child abandonment, and the general respect for all of humanity. I think many of us would appreciate a reply and some action taken. Someone should also contact the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office and provide them with some basic education on what a newborn baby is.

One other comment: In the Christmas season when we celebrate the birth of a newborn baby in just a few more days, you and even the DuPage State's Attorney's Office really could have aroused the public's sympathies in a heartfelt way to increase awareness of the SAFE HAVEN LAW in Illinois! Here's a source of information: http://www.saveabandonedbabies.org/. This wasn't even mentioned. You have the power to help get this information out! This teen could have handed her baby over to any police/fire/emergency facility, no questions asked, and maybe she wasn't even aware! Please consider!!

To M. Williams, and anyone else that believes human life only begins once a baby is able to sustain life on their own outside of the womb - Could you please explain that to the parents of the premature babies I take care of as a Neonatal RN? If a baby is on a ventilator to help them breath, does that mean they are not a "baby"? Human life begins at conception and the minute we said it was ok to abort these children is the minute that we as a country stopped valuing human life!
Jesse's Girl December 20, 2012 at 04:16 AM
Perhaps the word fetus is used because it was discarded. The baby wasn't wanted. When a baby in the womb isn't wanted its called a fetus so that an abortion can be "justified". No matter what term is used and no matter at what stage (in or out), it is life and to end that life is murder. The misuse of the word fetus shows the ignorance in a society that does not value human life.
Nancy Jones December 20, 2012 at 07:29 PM
I think they used the term "feus" because it was at a non-viable age. We won't know for sure until we get more details, but it's better to assume innocence until proven guilty, is it not people!

If she delivered before 21 weeks then the fetus has not yet developed a full body skin and therefore cannot survive outside the womb, so they may refer to it as a fetus and not a newborn. Terrible to think this person felt the only way to handle this was to dump her offspring, wether it was preterm, not born alive, or in fact a newborn who was alive. It seems an adult possibly assisted her, god and those present are the only ones who know what happened and why the decision was made to dump the little one. So sad and so awful to think how this little one may have suffered if in fact it was born alive.
Kelly December 21, 2012 at 04:57 PM
Initial reports in the CT shooting only stated adults were shot. I think the media can only report what it currently knows and the rest of us should be intelligent enough to understand that information in any tragedy moves slowly.
Kelly December 21, 2012 at 05:01 PM
It also seems distatseful to me that this sad situation has seemed to sprout Anti-Choice commentary. This is a personal tragedy and it is sad enough that this happened - whatever the circumstances. It does not appear that this loss of life is related to Pro-Choice/Anti-Choice circumstances.

I am always saddened by an abandonment or infant body found when we have this Law here in Illinios. Even today there was another little one found on the SouthSide of Chicago. We really do need to get this information out there! Perhaps we also need to add more places where they could turn in a little one? How can we reach these young girls or women who are not ready or willing to be mothers?
Kelly December 21, 2012 at 05:13 PM
As a Neonatal RN you must know that prior to 21 weeks survival outside the womb with all the assistance that modern medicine can offer is rare. This in fact could be an early delivery or even a spontaneous abortion as the child was not alive at delivery. This girl seems to have chosen Life and yet there is so much talk of the trials of the NICU parents or of people who are Pro-Choice.
Kelly December 21, 2012 at 05:15 PM
Amen! tragedys like a little one delivered preterm and not alive do happen. This woman may have had no medical care or hiding a pregnancy or even abused and then lost her child.

Look- I hope we get more info on this story soon, but to say innocent until proven guilty is a stretch. No matter what, if this girl did throw this "baby/fetus/whatever you choose to call it" in the trunk and in a dumpster, she is by NO MEANS innocent. Whether the child was born alive or not.
8675309 December 21, 2012 at 05:36 PM
She may not have medica carel, yet she went to the hospital after suffering complications from child birth. So her life, her health was important enough to seek medical care, but not that of the child she was carrying inside her.
SimplyCJ December 21, 2012 at 06:06 PM
A fetus. Really? Try BABY. Just like the babies murdered at Sandy Hook. This is so sad.
Paul Esposito December 22, 2012 at 02:26 AM
We are called many things on our journey. We start as a zygote, then progress to an embryo, then to a fetus. Those are the scientific terms for what an expectant mom and dad know as a baby. Born pre-term, the baby may be called a premie; if not, an infant. The infant grows to be a toddler, then an adolescent, a pre-teen, a teen, and an adult. Even as adult, there are more terms: a young adult, a thirty-something, a middle-ager, an elder. All are terms that describe our various stages of life. And there lies the point. Life. From the moment of conception, we are living, growing human beings. That is the most important term. It gives us a dignity that seems to be lost on our culture. That a dead human being of whatever age and whatever stage was found in a dumpster is a tragedy. That our culture has such a difficult time in recognizing the human life lost is a tragedy all its own.

Come on people. This was a horrific thing that happened. We do not know the entire story and who cares about the debate over the word fetus. Holy cow. It was a baby that a "baby" delivered. It is not our place to stand in judgement. Find something important in your life to focus on ~ it time better spent.

Beat and dump this scum in a dumpster when she's caught. Some people here are idiots making excuses for this low life scum bag. Even if she had no insurance a hospital or clinic would have treated her. It sounds more like a little slut who likes her sex and no longer wanted the baby as it interfered with her so called life. If this pig did in fact deliver a live baby and then put it in a dumpster to die, deserves life in prison . You little scum bag.
Despiser of Obama December 22, 2012 at 02:55 PM
Plus this girl is so stupid. If the baby was alive , she could have taken it to a hospital for further care, no questions asked.
Tfox December 22, 2012 at 03:50 PM
Christ would not judge - he would love and forgive. What must it be like to be so perfect that you can stand in judgement of others?
Erik Bloecks December 22, 2012 at 03:54 PM
Besides being stupid, she was most likely scared too. Fear is a powerful emotion to overcome. It can cloud clear thinking that going to a hospital or firehouse IS the proper course of action.
Bunky December 22, 2012 at 03:57 PM
Tfox...thank you for being a sane human being to post.
Despiser of Obama December 22, 2012 at 04:09 PM
Tfox God does judge to an extent and so will the courts judge. She deserves prison.
Dmitri December 22, 2012 at 07:27 PM
What an irony! When the fetus is in Kate Middleton's womb and its father is Prince William people welcome the news with joy. When the fetus is of a single, possibly frightened teenage, it ended in a mall dumpster! And Kate's fetus is so much younger than the dead one. Both fetuses are human beings. Discrimination is still alive and well...that's the way of the world.
Sharon Storm December 23, 2012 at 05:11 AM
this horrible thing has happened and you people are arguing about what is the correct term to use? get some perspective!
bubbles December 23, 2012 at 05:55 AM
Fear is no excuse to toss a child away like garbage. Selfish slut. She had several months to think about this and get information on a pregnancy crisis. She could have at least left that child on someone's doorstep or even a park bench if she had no other option. What a scumbag I hope she pays for this.
Despiser of Obama December 24, 2012 at 03:07 PM
When this scum is located , remove her uterus so she can ever get pregnant again.
bubbles December 25, 2012 at 01:36 AM
I wish sterilization could be mandated in cases where parents kill their own children. Granted this deceased baby might have been stillborn, but why throw it away like a candy wrapper. What a total disregard for life. This birther only cared about herself, she even went to get medical care for herself while that child was rotting away in a dumpster. Disgusting.
Nancy Jones January 02, 2013 at 06:54 PM
For all we/you know the "baby" was dead and spontaneously aborted, as happens in nature. I maintain it is prudent to hold off on judgment.
