Expelled Glenbard South Student Avoids Felony Charge with Plea Deal
The Lombard teen was expelled in September for bringing a 30-inch replica weapon into the Glen Ellyn high school; his stated intent was to trade it.
A Lombard teenager and former Glenbard South High School student who was expelled in September for bringing a 30-inch club into the school has pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of a weapon, avoiding any chance of a felony conviction, the Daily Herald reports.
According to the paper, Steven Allen, 17, was sentenced to conditional discharge for a year, plus 100 hours of community service and a DuPage County Jail tour. His defense attorney, Tim Martin, said that the boy was a history buff and only made the Native American-style wooden club in order to trade for a coonskin cap.
“He's grateful to the state [and] is lucky he has a new lease on life without a felony conviction,” Martin told the paper, adding that the boy has obtained a GED and will start college in Montana later this year.

"It took him a month to make [the club]… He had absolutely no intent to cause any harm or use it in any other fashion than to hang it on a wall as a piece of art.”
