League of Women Voters Opposes DuPage County Resolution on Graduated Income Tax

Wheaton Illinois, February 11, 2014 - The non-partisan League of Women Voters of Illinois, including its six DuPage County chapters, oppose the DuPage County Board resolution that would deny DuPage County citizens and citizens throughout Illinois the right to vote on a referendum to amend the Illinois Constitution to allow taxing ‘higher income at a higher rate and lower income at a lower rate’.  The League believes it is important for citizens to have a say in how they are governed and taxed. The County Board resolution would oppose legislative action to put the amendment question on the ballot. County Board Members were not elected to weigh in on our behalf on Constitutional questions, but to do the business of the County.

While the League agrees that we need to stimulate economic growth, that won’t happen until we put money back in the pockets of the middle class to spend in the economy.  Significant research shows that a fairer tax, where higher incomes pay higher rates and lower incomes pay lower rates, will do that, promoting a positive change for all of us- business and citizen alike.

We urge all citizens to learn more by visiting the League of Women Voters of Illinois website (www.lwvil.org) and by visiting A Better Illinois coalition website (www.abetterillinois.org).  Your local League of Women Voters leaders would also welcome your questions and involvement.
