Glen Ellyn Mourns Deaths of Two Retired Firefighters

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. and the Village of Glen Ellyn are mourning the deaths of two retired members of the fire company, Fred W. Leonard and Rodney C. Pennington both died over the weekend.

Leonard, 76, was the former owner of the Leonard Memorial Home and a retired volunteer firefighter on the company. He died Saturday, according to the funeral home. He served on the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. from 1957 to 1995, according to a news release from the Village of Glen Ellyn.

Leonard will be interred at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Hill Cemetery, according to the Leonard Memorial Home.

Rodney C. Pennington, 60, died Sunday, according to the funeral home. He was a member of the volunteer fire company from 1976 to 2011, the village said.

A visitation will be held for Pennington Nov. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Leonard Memorial Home. A service will be held at 7 p.m., according to the funeral home.

Between the two men, they volunteered more than 72 years of service to their community, the Village of Glen Ellyn said. In their honor, The Glen Ellyn flag is being flown at half-mast and commemorative bunting adorns the Civic Center in remembrance.

“The Village is grateful for their community-minded spirit and dedication in serving the people of Glen Ellyn,” officials said in a news release.
