Brain Aneurysm Awareness on Capitol Hill
Survivors from across the country will gather on Capitol Hill to increase brain aneurysm awareness and an Illinois survivor will be joining them!
In May, I will be joining survivors representing other states across the country on Capitol Hill. As a brain aneurysm survivor, I will be speaking on behalf of thousands of Illinois survivors. This is all part of an initiative with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation to increase brain aneurysm awareness, research funding, and to increase early detection of brain aneurysms.
In 2011, the United States Senate passed a resolution declaring September National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month. Senate Resolution 248, introduced by Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and co-sponsored by Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) and Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) is designed to help raise awareness of the dangers and increase public awareness and understanding of brain aneurysms, including methods of early detection and treatment. A similar resolution, introduced by Representative Edward Markey (D-MA) is pending in the House of Representatives.
According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation: An estimated 6 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm, or 1 in 50 people. The annual rate of rupture is approximately 8 per 100,000 people or about 25,000 people. About 40% of all people who have a ruptured brain aneurysm will die as a result 4 out of 7 people who recover from a ruptured brain aneurysm will have disabilities. Brain aneurysms are most prevalent in people ages 35 – 60, but can occur in children as well. Women, more than men, suffer from brain aneurysms at a ratio of 3:2 Ruptured brain aneurysms account for 3 – 5% of all new strokes.

A new awareness campaign is now hitting the radio airwaves. Currently, a new radio public service announcement has been created for The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. The psa was distributed through partnerships with Syndication Networks, Cumulus Media Networks, Next Media, Clear Channel Radio, WTMX Radio and the Illinois Radio Network. As a result the Brain Aneurysm Awareness PSA will air on 7000 radio stations across the country reaching 161 million people.
