Reading is so delicious at the Glen Ellyn Library this summer!

The Glen Ellyn Library invites you to experience summer reading with a food-themed summer reading program for kids, teens and adults, Reading Is So Delicious!

Libraries across Illinois invite you to experience summer reading with a food-themed summer reading program for kids, teens and adults, Reading is So Delicious! The Glen Ellyn Public Library is embracing this theme with lots of great incentives to get members of the Glen Ellyn community reading this summer.

The program for kids (from birth through grade 8 ) offers something special this year. Not only are there a variety of great prizes and food-inspired programs to keep your children reading all summer long, but there is an incentive for kids who sign up early this year. Those who sign up between May 21 and June 10 will receive a free gummy worm and a head start toward their goals!

Traditionally, the library celebrates summer reading with its annual Ice Cream Social. This year, it will take place on Monday, June 11 from 7 to 8:30 pm in the library parking lot. Come enjoy a sundae, ice pop or fresh fruit. In case of rain, join us in the library’s meeting rooms for the same tasty treats. During the Ice Cream Social, the Friends of the Library will also host a Used Book Sale in the library basement featuring thousands of books and other items for all ages.

Teens will receive a t-shirt just for signing up for summer reading. A grand prize drawing will be held at the end of the summer for a Kindle Fire for those who meet their reading goals. Adults will receive a cutting board for signing up for summer reading, and two fabulous grand prize gift baskets will be awarded at the end of the summer. For every five books read, adults are entered into the grand prize drawing on August 14. There will also be weekly drawings for gift certificates to Marcel’s Culinary Experience in Downtown Glen Ellyn, sponsored by Marcel’s itself. Gepl.org/summer has full summer reading details and links to where summer readers can track their progress online.

Near the end of summer reading, on Saturday, August 11 from 11 am to 2 pm, an Edible Book Festival will take place at the library. This scrumptious event will celebrate books, food and the people who love them. Participate by bringing a piece of edible art related to books. It can be a pun on a title (think Alice in Wonderbread, War and Peas), or it can refer to a literary scene or a character. Use your imagination and make your creation edible. Visit gepl.org/ediblefestival for a detailed schedule of the event and entry rules. Enter online for find paper entry forms available at the Second Floor Information Desk. Everyone is welcome to view entries and enjoy fruit, yogurt, pretzels and mini muffins at the Festival. Entrants must be GEPL cardholders.
