Glen Ellyn Food Pantry Hopes to Fill 550 Thanksgiving Food Boxes

Can you help families in need have a Thanksgiving feast?

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry needs your help. As the season of feasting approaches, many local families  cannot afford to feed their families.

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is sponsoring 550 families in need by providing Thanksgiving food boxes. Local residents can help the cause by sponsoring a Thanksgiving food box. A $50 tax-deductible donation provides a family with a 12- to 14-pound turkey, a box of nonperishable foods, and milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs and other perishable foods. Donations of any amount are welcome and well help meet the 550-box goal.

The Thanksgiving Meal Appeal is one of the most important fund-raising campaigns the pantry conducts all year. Slow economic growth and rising fuel and food prices have left many local families struggling with hunger for the first time. As a result, increasing numbers of people are requesting food assistance from the pantry.

Whole Foods Market in Wheaton chose Glen Ellyn Food Pantry as its One Dime at a Time recipient for October, November and December. The program provides an incentive for Whole Foods’ customers to eliminate single-use plastic bags and develop stronger communities all at the same time.

Shoppers can participate by shopping at Whole Foods Market, 151 Rice Lake Square, using eco-friendly reusable shopping bags. At the register, customers have the option to receive a 10 cent per bag refund as cash back off their receipt, or they can choose to donate it to that month’s selected charity organization. For the next three months, all donations will support Glen Ellyn Food Pantry's mission to provide food assistance to hungry neighbors in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Carol Stream, Lombard, Lisle and Glendale Heights.

The store is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
