Wheaton-Glen Ellyn AAUW Holiday Party

Our annual holiday dinner will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, beginning at 6 p.m.at Klein Creek Golf Club in Winfield. The festive evening includes networking, dinner and a thought-provoking presentation, including photos and sound recordings, by one of the AAUW EOF recipients, Melissa Bilal. Melissa grew up in Istanbul, Turkey where her family still lives. She has a PhD from the University of Chicago in music history, musicology, and theory. She is interested in lullabies as women's protest songs around the world. Her current project traces the memory of Armenian lullabies in Turkey to give voice to the unspoken traumas of the past and to the experience of being "minoritized" in one's homeland. She believes that an Armenian lullaby in Turkey has the capacity to connect the singer with listeners across generations and communities to resist repressive politics.
