At 1:00pm on Sunday, December 9th, the Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance and director, Gina Detienne, will perform a concert of holiday songs and other classical favorites.

Sunday's concert performance will include holiday carols by the Youth Strings, and Corelli’s “Christmas” Concerto by the Academy Orchestra. In addition, a presentation of Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony will be performed, complete with a “farewell” by the Academy members. This symphony is a well-known piece where a “strike” by the musicians was composed into the music. In 1772, the prince of Esterhazy ignored repeated requests to release his musicians from their completed summer duties and allow them to return to their families’ in Eisenstadt. Haydn’s symphony was performed in concert at the prince’s palace to convey the message “it was time to go home”. The symphony worked. Prince Esterhazy let his musicians go after the performance. It is the classical version of later “labor” songs of other cultures.

The concert will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 420 West Downer Place, Aurora. (Parking lot is behind the church on Garfield Ave.).  Admission to the concert is free and open to the public, and donations are accepted. Our Savior Lutheran Church also has a Nativity Scene Walk open all day in their chapel. The audience may visit the chapel to view nativity scenes from various cultures.

The Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance is associated with the Fox Valley Philharmonic. The Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing a “Do-It-Yourself” (sing-along) Messiah at a 3:00pm concert.

These concerts are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
