Downers Grove Choral Society Presents A Choral Thanksgiving: Te Deum

The Downers Grove Choral Society presents A Choral Thanksgiving: Te Deum on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 3:00 pm. The concert will be held at First United Methodist Church located at 1032 Maple Avenue, Downers Grove. Tickets can be purchased at www.dgcs.org or by phone at 630.515.0030.

The Latin Te Deum text is an early Christian hymn of praise, one often used at times of thanksgiving. Each of the three composers--George Friedrich Handel, Karl Jenkins and Herbert Howells--approaches the traditional text through a unique lens so the audience may experience the striking musical contrasts in structure and emotion. Listeners can expect to hear a variety of music, from Handel’s recognizable compositional style in the Dettingen Te Deum (commissioned in thanksgiving for the British army’s victory at the Battle of Dettingen against the French), to Karl Jenkins joyous and percussive treatment of the subject to Howells’s dramatic and majestic work that incorporates unified strength from the chorus. The Chorus will also present Ralph Vaughan-Williams “The Voice Out of the Whirlwind,” adapted from a musical ballet inspired by the artwork of William Blake to describe Job’s tale of woe and salvation.

The chorus will be joined by three outstanding soloists, Downers Grove native Joseph Schlesinger, countertenor; Klaus Georg, tenor; and Keven Keys, baritone.
