Week in Review: Police Standoff, Armed Robbery

A roundup of this week's news events.

This week started off with some major breaking news. 

Eric J. Rego, 35, of Glen Ellyn,  after allegedly beating his pregnant wife. The DuPage County Sheriff's SWAT team responded to the incident and removed him from the apartment. and reports reveal a detailed criminal background. 

Later, more breaking news developed just a few miles away on Roosevelt Road.

Walgreens' employees reported that a man brandishing a knife at the pharmacy counter was demanding a specific drug called "Opana ER," which is classified as a controlled substance, according to a news release from the police department.

Employees handed over about 50 pills and the man fled from the store. Nobody was hurt in the incident. 

Another theft stole headlines Friday.

Former Treasurer of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Firefighter Company, David W. Garmoe, 54, of Glen Ellyn, was arrested for charges of theft after allegedly stealing more than $260,000 from the Fire Company from 2004 to early 2011. 

On Monday, Patch published the Village of Glen Ellyn's decision to immediately put into effect a multi-pronged auditing system that will oversee the books for the Fire Company.

Earlier this week, Metra commuters found out they'll soon be able to ride in peace and quiet.

Starting June 6, Metra is adding quiet cars. That means no cell phone calls, no conversations and no music blaring from headphones.

Demarco Whitley was back in court on Friday.

With all of the prosecution's evidence in hand, the attorney for Whitley said she'll take the next few weeks to determine whether the former football player could have known the age of the girl authorities accuse him of assaulting.
