UPDATE: Storm Leaves Thousands Without Power, Restoration Could Take Days

ComEd is reporting that more than 10,000 customers are without power in the Glenbard region.

Update 8 a.m. Some Glen Ellyn ComEd customers could be in the dark until Sunday. 

According to a statement from the village, ComEd has restored power to half of the customers that were left in the dark after Monday morning's storm.

ComEd says it plans to restore power to 90 percent of Glen Ellyn customers by noon on Friday and 99 percent by 5 p.m. on Sunday. 

That could mean four more days in the dark for some Glen Ellyn residents.

This announcement comes after temperatures creeped up to 90 degrees. To seek shelter from the heat, ComEd released a list of cooling centers, which includes the Glen Ellyn Civic Center at 535 Duane St. 

The Glen Ellyn Police Department will provide extra officers to patrol areas without power during the night, and Glen Ellyn Public Works crews are continuing the clean-up effort.

Monday, July 11 

Update 6:40 p.m. ComEd says outages could last for a few days. 

The power company sent a message via Twitter on Monday at 6:38 p.m. that asks customers to prepare for a "multi-day restoration."

ComEd is encouraging customers to stock up on water and to seek shelter at cooling centers if necessary. 

Glen Ellyn's cooling center is located at the at 535 Duane St. ComEd provided this list for all Chicagoland cooling centers. 

Update 6:15 p.m. The village of Glen Ellyn received more than 1,000 phone calls at the height of today's storm.

According to Glen Ellyn Deputy Chief Bill Holmer, residents called to report downed power lines, tree limbs and power outages. Most of those calls came in between 8 and 9 a.m. on Monday. Holmer said ComEd has not provided information to the village on how many Glen Ellyn customers are still in the dark.

According to a press release from the village, more officers will work overnight to patrol areas without power.

The village is encouraging residents to report outages and downed wires on ComEd's website.   

2:19 p.m. A severe thunderstorm whipped through Glen Ellyn early this morning leaving thousands without power. 

According to this map from ComEd, there are more than 10,000 customers without power in the Glenbard region. 

Take a quick drive through Glen Ellyn and you can see downed power lines and numerous tree limbs on the side of the roadways. 

The storm caused businesses and facilities throughout the village to be without power, as well. Around 11 a.m. the Glen Ellyn Park District reported outages at and . 

Some residents took to social media to post updates on the outages including through the Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook page. One comment reported downed power lines on Hill Avenue east of Lorraine Street, while another resident closer to the Wheaton border reported no outage problems. 

ComEd is reporting that it may take several days to bring people back online.
