Neighbors Rally Behind Fire Victims

The Micklo family home was destroyed in an early morning fire on Monday and what was left was recently torn down.

All that remains of the Micklo family home on Dawes Avenue is a pile of rubble. A heap of recovered belongings are scattered on the front yard; blue snow sleds, a white watering can and an American flag.

"They lost everything except the lives of their children and dog. They need to rebuild their lives and there are a lot of immediate things they need," said next-door neighbor Debbie MacKerell.

Just across the street, the neighborhood kids sit behind homemade signs, hoping to attract customers to their Micklo lemon"aide" stand. Since they started selling baked goods and refreshing drinks the kids have raised $725.

That money will be added to a Chase bank account that will help the family purchase things that may not be covered by the insurance.

A demolition crew came Wednesday morning to tear down the home. There's now a gap where the home used to sit and the kids across the street are determined to help.

"If my house burned down I would hope people would do the same for me," said neighbor Sam Springfloat a freshman at Glenbard South.

The neighbors have rallied together to help their neighbors anyway they can. MacKerell said that's why their neighborhood is so special, "people see a need and they just jump in and take care of it."
