Halloween Parade Continues Longstanding Glen Ellyn Tradition

A Glen Ellyn Halloween tradition continues this weekend as the Halloween Parade takes center stage downtown.

Children and parents, families and friends will be parading through downtown in their cute, crazy, crafty costumes. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Prairie Path Park. Children will begin lining up at 9:45 a.m.

“Easily, 1,200 or so kids with their families,” will be parading through town, said Georgia Koch, co-executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. “There are people who are coming back now who went to the parade as children. It’s been going on for generations, because, literally, it has been going on that long.”

The parade is a fun tradition for families. The Glenbard West High School marching band will lead the parade and all the children will show off their finest costumes, Koch said. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Downtown windows are painted in Halloween themes and businesses will be handing out candy after the parade.

“I hardly know of any businesses who aren’t participating,” she said. “We have handed out 80 or so trick-or-treat signs.”

If families see the signs in business windows they know they can trick or treat at a business. 

Main Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Crescent Boulevard will remain closed until 1 p.m. Saturday as children trick or treat at downtown businesses.
