Glen Ellyn Food Pantry to Benefit from Nicor Gas Food Drive

Employees at Nicor Gas locations around northern Illinois, including Glen Ellyn, collected food and monetary donations for area food pantries.

At a time when the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is in great need of food and donations, employees from one area utility company are giving back to help those in need.

Employees from Nicor Gas collected food and made monetary donations to nine northern Illinois food pantries to help them meet the demand during this time of year.

The employees held food drives at Nicor locations around the area and collected about 1,000 pounds of food and collected $31,500 in monetary donations for local food pantries, according to a news release from Nicor Gas.

In addition, food items will remain in communities where they were collected. And, food will be donated directly to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.

The largest donation was made to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The organization received a check for $20,000 from Nicor Gas, according to the news release. The Northern Illinois Food Bank works with about 700 network partners, serving more than 60,000 people in need each week across 13 counties.

Last week, the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry said it was in desperate need for donations as funds and non-perishable food is running low.

The food pantry serves those in need in Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Lisle and Wheaton. It has seen an influx of new clients who are in need. The organization registers roughly four new clients a day, according to an official with the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.
