Subdivision Under Evacuation; Districts 41, 87 Cancel Classes; Glen Ellyn Library Closed Thursday

County is providing sandbags to municipalities in need.Flooding and concern over unsafe travel conditions have caused Thursday's cancellations.

The Valley View subdivision, which is located at Route 53 and Butterfield Road in unincorporated Glen Ellyn is flooding and homes are currently being evacuated, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office. The Office is assisting the Lisle Woodridge Fire Department, Geneva Fire Department and the Sugar Grove Fire Department, are rescuing the flooded residents by boats, then they will be transported to the local elementary school Arborview. The Sheriff has no reports of any injuries but is asking the public to refrain from traveling in the area of Route 53 and Butterfield Road.

A flash flood warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday night. The National Weather Service has issued the flash flood warning for urban areas and small streams in DuPage County, along with areas around Chicagoland.

The Village of Glen Ellyn’s Public Works department has enacted its emergency plan for Lake Ellyn and is working to secure the area with the assistance of the Glen Ellyn Police Department.

Both Lake Ellyn and Lambert Lake have overflowed, along with several detention ponds, the village said in a news release.

Residents have been notified about the action plan. The village has also placed 400 sandbags at the north end of Lake Ellyn to manage flooding and erosion of the Lake Ellyn bank, the village said.

The Village of Glen Ellyn and DuPage County are under a flood warning until at least noon today, according to the National Weather Service.

“The Village is fully mobilized and is doing everything we can to monitor and communicate critical information,” the village said in its news release.

Many streets are closed, including Roosevelt Road between Nicoll and Baker Hill. Residents are asked to use extreme caution while traveling, and avoid traveling today if possible.

Sand and bags (create your own sandbags) will be available in the Montclair parking lot at 11 a.m. – please bring own shovel to create the bags. To get to parking lot, enter off Montclair.

School districts 41, 87 and 89 have canceled school for today, as has St. Petronille’s.

From Glen Ellyn School District 41

Today our buildings are closed and all afternoon and evening activities are cancelled. This includes programs and activities sponsored by non-district organizations. No information is available at this time regarding when activities may be rescheduled.

From Glenbard District 87

Due to flooded streets and some power outages, all Glenbard schools are closed and all after-school activities throughout Glenbard District 87 are cancelled for April 18.

A statement was issued by County Board Chairman Dan Cronin:

“DuPage County has suffered from severe flooding throughout the entire county. We are working with our municipal partners to help alleviate the situation for our residents. More than 39,000 sandbags have been provided to the municipalities and we have opened the County’s shelter located at Benedictine University in Lisle, where more than 25 people are currently seeking services. The County is also operating all 15 of our flood control facilities including the Elmhurst Quarry, Fawell Dam in Naperville, Spring Creek Reservoir in Bloomingdale and the Wood Dale-Itasca Reservoir. We will continue to monitor the situation and assist residents during this unprecedented flooding event,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

DuPage County has received 4 to 5 inches of rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday morning. Another 1 to 2 inches of precipitation are forecasted throughout the day Thursday.

Schools in Glen Ellyn District 41 and Glenbard District 87 are closed today due to the weather and unsafe travel conditions caused by flooding.

The Glen Ellyn Public Library is also closed due to flooding, according to the library.

Community Consolidated District 89 is open for classes today, according to the district’s website.
