Coldwell Ranks Glen Ellyn Expensive Place to Live

Glen Ellyn makes the top-twenty list as one of the most expensive housing markets in Illinois.

According to the 2011 Home Listing Report released by Coldwell Banker, Glen Ellyn is one of the state's most expensive markets to live in.

The report reviewed average listing prices for homes with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Of the 139 real estate markets reviewed in Illinois, Glen Ellyn slides in at number 13, making it one of the most expensive places to own a home in Illinois.

"I just think Glen Ellyn is a very family focused and oriented community and because it has all that in place, it just becomes a desirable place for people to set down roots, so they may be willing to pay," said local Remax realtor Jane O'Loughlin.

And that price is $429,827. The almost half a million dollars is the average price homeowners in Glen Ellyn will pay for a four bedroom, two bathroom home, which is nearly $325,000 less than the most expensive market in Illinois.

Lake Forest sits at the top of the list, making it the most expensive market in Illinois with the average home price of $753,543.

The neighboring market in Wheaton rounds out the top-twenty list with an average listing of $403,190. Besides being a short distance from downtown Chicago for commuters, O'Loughlin said an excellent school system is one reason why Glen Ellyn and Wheaton rank so high on the list.

"They have very fine school report cards and I feel that people that are gravitating toward the purchase of a four bedroom home would likely be a family, so a school system is going to be a driving factor in where they choose to live," said O'Loughlin.

Add great schools to a "main street America-kind of living" and O'Loughlin says it's a great place to raise a family, "it's just like small town USA."
