What could become a new Glen Ellyn tradition kicks off Saturday morning.
The will be hosting the first of five planned “Family Cookouts” before games. The family-friendly events will be held on the site of at Pennsylvania Avenue and Park Boulevard.
The cookouts are planned for five choice Saturdays over the course of the football season, said Danny Sronkoski, owner of the Tap House Grill and North Side Bar & Grill. The first game of the season, the Hilltoppers will host Wheaton Warrenville South.
“I have had this idea for a while. I really had to find some private property to do it on. J & R was really nice to let us use his property,” Sronkoski said. “The idea has been brewing for a couple years now and I decided to make it happen.”
The hope is that it becomes a new tradition for families to come downtown and enjoy the atmosphere before the football games or just enjoy some fun downtown, he said.
A special menu of items will be available including wings, a walking burrito – which can be carried and eaten, a bag o’donuts for kids and a jalapeno and cheddar stuffed chicken breast, he said. Beverages will be limited to a few types of beer, a bloody Mary bar, Gatorade and water.
The business had to go through the permit process for the event along with the process to get a special event liquor license, said Assistant to the Village Manager, Kristen Schrader.
Organizations and businesses often request the special event permits to host events throughout the year, she said. The first event is being held pending board approval, in order to meet the event deadline.
People seem to enjoy outdoor events in , and Sronkoski said he is hoping it becomes a new tradition.
He plans to have a bags game set up and a football for tossing around, he said.
“I really think it will turn into something really popular,” he said.
