Oberweis Seeking to Move, Open Burger Joint

Oberweis' new concept is combining with another food retailer to offer more options at one location.

Glen Ellyn could be the second home to Oberweis Dairy's newest concept for dining.

The family-owned ice cream and dairy shop wants to open a dual restaurant that will continue to serve dairy products alongside a hamburger place, "That Burger Joint."

The dual store would open up shop at 515 Roosevelt Rd., the old Chase Bank location, and could also house Connie's Pizza, according to a memo from Dave Hassler, vice president of Oberweis stores.

In the memo Hassler said the new venture "will continue the Oberweis legacy of providing the most wholesome and best-tasting food products available."

"That Burger Joint" will serve up all natural, never frozen Angus beef free of hormones, said Hassler, plus chicken and french fries.

Other amenities to the store include an outdoor seating area located on the south of the building, in addition to a drive-thru, which Hassler said remains a significant portion of the current store's revenues.

The concept is currently under review in Glen Ellyn and before construction can begin the project needs zoning and permit approvals. Currently, the 515 Roosevelt Rd. location is zoned C4 office district and needs to be re-zoned to C3 service commercial.

The similar concept is also under review in Skokie.

Oberweis hopes to begin construction in Glen Ellyn this fall.
