Meijer to Hire 900 New Employees in Illinois

Meijer is gearing up to hire 900 new employees in Illinois in preparation for the fall and holiday season, according to the retailer.

In the next few months, Meijer is planning to add roughly 9,000 thousand jobs around the Midwest, including 900 jobs in Illinois — including the Chicago area.

The retailer is preparing to add the positions in advance of the fall and holiday seasons, according to a company executive.

The Grand Rapids, Mich. based Meijer operates 203 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. The company plans to open nine more stores next year in addition to the six stores expected to open in 2013, Janet Emerson, executive vice president of operations said in a news release.

“Our continued growth, along with the upcoming holiday selling season, make it imperative that we increase our staffing to properly operate our stores and deliver on the Meijer promise of providing exceptional customer service,” Emerson said in the release.

Meijer stores are open 24 hours, and only close on Christmas Day. Every Meijer store has some job openings available, though staffing needs will vary store-to-store, according to the news release.

Interested candidates are asked to complete an online application. During the online application process, prospective team members can indicate their store preference, according to the news release. Candidates may also complete an online application at the employment kiosks located at the front of most Meijer stores. Local store management will then follow up with qualified candidates.

A new store will typically need to hire between 200 to 250 employees, according to Meijer. While many of the jobs are part-time, traditional jobs of stockers and cashiers, there is also the need for more specialized roles including cake decorators or meat cutters, positions that can transition to leadership roles.

“While many of these opportunities are part time, these jobs can provide a gateway to a full-time career at Meijer,” Kevin Wiederhold, vice president of human resources for retail operations said in the news release. “As we continue to grow, we are frequently looking to fill our on-going part-time and full-time needs. These positions provide a great opportunity to get your foot in the door and demonstrate success within a growing company.”

The breakdown of job opening needs:

  • Michigan: 4,400 team members
  • Ohio: 1,600 team members
  • Indiana: 1,800 team members
  • Illinois: 900 team members
  • Kentucky: 500 team members

Interested candidates are asked to complete an online application at www.jobs.meijer.com.
