Hold the Flour! Glen Ellyn's Flour + Wine to Change Name

In July, the downtown dining spot will officially change its name to fire + wine to avoid going to court with a California restaurant.

Seeking to avoid a court battle and keep its focus on the food, Glen Ellyn’s well-known dining establishment flour + wine will soon have a new name.

The restaurant, known for its pizza, pasta and, according to diners, consistently good food, will soon change its name to fire + wine.

A California restaurant filed a complaint recently claiming ownership of a name similar to flour + wine, according to the owners. To avoid litigation and what might be a long, drawn out court battle the owners will change the name, effective July 1, shortly after its first anniversary.

“Since we started this fire on the West coast, we think it’s appropriate to rename ourselves fire + wine,” said flour + wine co-owner Michael Vai. “We can spend the next 18 months in a court battle over the name, or we can continue to focus on feeding people. We’d rather keep our customers our priority.”

Other than the name, nothing else will change at the restaurant. The restaurant’s “Chef’s Playground” and weekly menu will remain, as will staffing, ownership and the restaurant itself.

“Customers have come to know and love ‘flour + wine,’ so a sudden name change could give customers the wrong idea,” said Anthony Vai, Michael Vai’s partner and son.

The name change has already been mentioned on Yelp! where at least one reader said she was informed about the name change while dining at the restaurant recently. She gave flour + wine  a four star review.

“Nothing about our operations or menu will change,” said Chef Brian Gowey. “I think my job is best done in fire + wine’s kitchen, not a courtroom.”
