Obama's America 2016 Love Him or Hate Him – Watch the Movie (Read time 4 min.)

My wife and I ventured out to Yorktown to see a movie this past weekend and saw 2016, a documentary based on President Obama's book; Dreams From My Father. I have not seen any advertisements for the movie, but the theater was packed. Watching the movie helped us understand what makes President Obama tick. Our President was raised much differently than any of his predecessors. The narrators for the movie are President Obama and Dinesh Desouza.  Desouza, like Obama was raised in a Third World country and offers a unique perspective.  The movie was very insightful and more than a bit troubling.

Like all of us, Barack Obama was shaped by many influences over a period of time. What is interesting is that his influences were so very different than anyone that has ever run for President. While some of President Obama's background was revealed during the 2008 campaign, most of what we learned from the documentary was not. The documentary revealed his father and mother were both socialists. His maternal grandfather selected a mentor for young Barry who was a long-time member of the Communist Party USA. The socialist New Party listed him as a member. His college professor Edward Said was the leading intellectual voice of those who want Israel destroyed. His law school mentor Roberto Unger was too far left for Brazil’s socialist party, and was sent back to Harvard, where he declined all interviews lest he endanger Obama’s electoral prospects. The minister who converted him to Christianity and married him was Jeremiah “Gad damn America” Wright.

President Obama is a smart man, but some of his decisions as President leave both sides of the political aisle shaking their collective heads.  One interesting  decision was when President Obama boxed up and returned a special gift, a bust statue of Winston Churchill, from England in the aftermath of 9/11. The gift represented the Churchill attitude of "never surrender".  Why would President Obama return a thoughtful gift from our ally?

Gas prices (the ultimate regressive tax on the poor and middle class) have more than doubled since President Obama took office while the employment picture is still very poor.  Why then would he not want to add a major oil pipeline (Keystone) that would help lower gas prices and add thousands of jobs?  The President is also against offshore oil drilling that would have the same effect while he choose to aid Mexico and Brazil in their offshore drilling projects.

What if our President does not share the same dreams as most Americans?   2016 Movie Trailer We knew very little about Barack Obama when he was elected in 2008.  His past has been an unknown and difficult to uncover since as he was not raised in the U.S. for much of his childhood.   "Being President doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are." Michelle Obama from last night's convention.

According to his own book, Dreams From My Father, and the movie 2016, President Obama was raised to believe that rich countries stole from the poor.  His parents and mentors influenced him to be an anti colonist, ultimately believing that America needs to move down to the level of the rest of the world.

As much as I follow politics, I hadn't thought much about the President's upbringing since he was elected.  This movie was very thought provoking and left me with many questions about our President.

Why this matters:

From a financial planning perspective: The U.S. National Debt (debt clock) just hit $16 trillion and if left unchecked we will see the annual interest on the debt be greater than $1 trillion.  That is more than we spend on our military or that the government receives in income tax payments each year.  When other nations lose faith in us to pay our debt, interest rates will soar and we could be the next Greece on a much larger scale.

While other countries around the world are growing their missile and nuclear capabilities, the U.S. has been greatly reducing their arms capabilities the past three years.  The U.S. is rapidly losing our military strength as compared to the rest of the world. This is scary to me as we allow Iran and others to build their nuclear capabilities.

Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Conservative, this documentary will give you tremendous insight into President's Obama's upbringing and views of the world.
