What Big Bird Teaches Adults About Government’s Wasteful Spending

Big Bird may wake people up to wasteful government spending

It’s the Spending Stupid!

What do you think is the biggest waste of our tax money?

Government spending by both parties is ridiculous and PBS and Big Bird is one on many examples of wasteful spending.  Remember, the government is taking money from your paycheck and deciding who to give it to.  In 2008, President Obama ran on the idea of cutting the deficit in half.  Instead, he and Congress spent about $6,000,000,000,000 more than the tax revenue received leaving the U.S with a deficit of over $16 trillion.  There is sooooo much money being spent in places we would never approve of if we were only aware.

“The bigger the government gets, the less profits and incomes are recycled into new entrepreneurial ventures. Today, non-defense government spending is at record high levels. If we want to turn the plow horse into a race horse, we must cut the size of government.” Brian Wesbury, Chief Economist at First Trust Advisors.

Did you know the president of Sesame Workshop makes more than the president of the United States? Sesame Workshop president and CEO Gary Knell got $684,144 in reportable compensation from his job. The salary of the US president is fixed by law at $400,000.

Governor Romney regarding Government funding of programs like the Public Broadcasting System (PBS).
This would be great if he and Congress follow it!

For fiscal year 2010, federal funding for PBS through [the Corporation for Public Broadcasting] accounted for about 12% of PBS’ revenue. In terms of dollars, that works out to about $300 million. There’s not much wiggle room to be had: the money that actually goes to CPB is split according to a mostly statutory formula.

For 2015, Congress has budgeted $445 million for CPB. That’s less than 1% of the budget. Way less. It’s about 1/100th of a 1%.  So the dollar amount is insignificant to our national deficit.  It's the point that the government needs to cut back everywhere where they have no business spending our money.
According to a pie chart of the group’s financials, 35 percent of the group’s cash comes from corporate, foundation, and government support. As we’ve seen, the “government” part of that isn’t very big.
Another 33 percent comes from product licensing. That’s all the Elmo dolls and so forth that clutter kids’ bedrooms around America. A final 32 percent comes from distribution fees and royalties.
So, Big Bird would do just fine if he has to leave Washington’s nest. He’d get royalties from the movie “Elmopalooza,” plus grants from corporate and foundation partners.
PBS would go on without a hitch if they did not get another penny of our tax money.

The following are 30 incredibly stupid things that the federal government is spending money on....

#2 The Obama administration plans to spend between 16 and 20 million dollars helping students from Indonesia get master's degrees.
#3 If you can believe it, the U.S. government has spent $175,587 "to determine if cocaine makes Japanese quail engage in sexually risky behavior".

#8 The federal government once spent 30 million dollars on a program that was designed to help Pakistani farmers produce more mangos.
#9 The U.S. Department of Agriculture once gave researchers at the University of New Hampshire $700,000 to study methane gas emissions from dairy cows.
#10 According to USA Today, 13 different government agencies "fund 209 different science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education programs — and 173 of those programs overlap with at least one other program."

There are so many more ways the government wastes our money. Both parties have a history of spending money (taken from our paychecks) on things we would never approve of if we were only aware.  I hope this "Big Bird" moment wakes some of us up and causes more transparency from those that spend our money.
