Wind, Cold and First Snowflakes Mark Winter's Arrival

Thursday's weather rollercoaster gives way to chilly Friday.

It might not have come entirely as advertised, but winter arrived late Thursday with howling wind and the first snowflakes of the season flying around.

As expected, a rainy mild day turned sharply cooler Thursday night with rain shifting to wet snow that covered lawns. National Weather Service predictions for multiple inches of snow had not yet been realized in many areas as of 11 p.m.

Still a winter storm warning remained in effect until 3 a.m. Friday, while areas to the west of Chicagoland were under a blizzard warning until Midnight.

Gusty conditions were blamed for sporadic power outages around the Chicago area. ComEd reported two minor service interruptions late Thursday - one north of Crescent Boulevard near Churchill Wood Forest Preserve and a second near Forest Hill Cemetary south of St. Charles Road.

The outages, which appeared to last for an hour or less based on ComEd information, impacted about 900 customers in those areas. Approximately 225 were without service as of 11 p.m., according to ComEd.

No matter how much white stuff is on the ground Friday morning around DuPage County, winter's presence will be felt in air as temperatures are expected to linger around 30 degrees with wind chills in the teens, according to Accuweather.

Another sign the storm didn't live up to its billing was a lack of closures or cancellations to events planned for Thursday night. Latest information on school and other closures can be found on the Emergency Closing Center website.
