UIC Honors Glen Ellyn Resident With Distinguished Alumni Award

Michael Doyle, a Glen Ellyn resident, was recently honored by the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Applied Health Sciences.

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Applied Health Sciences has honored a Glen Ellyn resident for his philanthropic contributions and his work in bioinformatics.

Michael Doyle, earned a BA in medical art (now known as biomedical visualization) in 1983 from UIC. On May 4, he was honored as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from UIC. The award was given out during the Applied Health Sciences Alumni and Faculty Awards Dinner, according to UIC.

After earning his BA at UIC he went on to earn a doctorate in cell and structural biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, according to UIC. He is the founder of Eolas Technologies Inc., which brings to market bioinformatics technologies and currently the CEO of Eolas’ research and development subsidiary, Iomas Research LLC.

Bioinformatics is a field, which tries to develop and improve methods of storing, analyzing, retrieving and organizing biological information, often through the use and creation of software.

“The enormity of Mike’s accomplishments in both art and science is matched only by the depth of his humility,” Bo Fernhall, dean of the College of Applied Health Sciences said in a news release. “His body of work in bioinformatics and his philanthropic contributions to both academic and artistic endeavors make him extremely deserving of the award.”

In addition to his work, Doyle is the founder and president of Buonacorsi Foundation, which supports arts organizations such as the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and the chamber orchestra Camerata Chicago. Through his foundation, Doyle is driving development and support of the Chicago branch of the National Museum of Health + Medicine—a museum whose exhibits will be almost fully virtual when it opens to the public in 2015, the news release said.

The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award is the highest honor bestowed upon alumni by the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences, according to UIC. Established in 1987, it is presented to those alumni who have attained outstanding success and national or international distinction in their chosen profession or life’s work, and whose accomplishments reflect admirably on or bring honor to their alma mater.

Doyle was born and raised in the Roseland and Beverly neighborhoods of Chicago. He is a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago and currently lives in Glen Ellyn.

He holds more than a dozen patents for technologies in data analysis, visualization, collaboration and networking. He’s been recognized internationally for his pioneering work in next-generation web applications and 3D technologies for biomedical applications.
