Update from ComEd via text message at 3:35 pm: "Due to severe activity, estimated restore time is not yet known."
The online outage map says "Additional crews required, assessing damage".

Thanks Jenn for sharing that information. Let's hope they restore the power soon.

I just took a look and it says 5:30 pm, so let's hope that is the case.

What is the cause? Severe activity means nothing. It is not like the heat of the summer with AC running constantly.

I have power! And I still haven't heard anything definite about a cause. The manager at Starbucks told me this morning that the automated system claimed "a line" was down, yet we had partial power all day.

I think that "severe activity" refers to the amount of damage done, since that didn't come into play until that 3:35 text message. But that's just a guess. We'll probably never know for sure.
